While Gov. Jon Corzine reportedly said today that Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano is going to resign on Friday, two city officials who just spoke with Cammarano -- including one of whom who was cornered after leaving the mayor's house just now -- say that this is false.

City attorney Steve Kleinman and proposed Public Safety Director Angel Alicea, who just talked with Cammarano at his home, say that Cammarano has "no intention" of resigning tomorrow. Reporter Tim Carroll just talked to Alicea after Alicea left Cammarano's house.

Sources close to Cammarano said that Corzine is merely trying to pressure him to resign.

However, Cammarano's lawyer, Joseph Hayden, told the Star Ledger earlier today that his client is mulling it over. And several council members are reportedly involved in a negotiation with Cammarano about how the transition will go.

So who's telling the truth? Or is it that a secret got out before it was supposed to?

Hayden and Cammarano could not be immediately reached for comment by the Reporter. However, the story will be continuously updated as we get new information.

Meanwhile, sources suggest that supporters of Dawn Zimmer, the City Council president, are in talks with Cammarano to work out a situation in which Councilwoman Carol Marsh, not Zimmer, will take over as mayor for the time being. However, those rumors are not definite.

What do you think? Comment below!

it doesnt surprise me that zimmer supporters would make all those power plays, but as you said, it was an undefinite rumor and they finally gave up in the end

That's interesting:

the LAST Cammarano opponent to call for his resignation is being rumored to take his place???? One HCDO sycophant to be traded for another?? We'd LOVE to know who those 'sources' are!!!

Cammarano won't file his post-election report with ELEC; it's way overdue. Scammy got $10,000 from HCDO triumvir Nick Sacco this go-round that he won't own up to( and who knows how much else since he's already been caught CONSPIRING TO NOT REPORT tens of thousands).

And fair is fair: Zimmer shouldn't be allowed to take the mayoralty until she files HER OWN way-overdue post-election report. She wasn't up front about taking HCDO money last time she ran for office; the voter has perfectly good reason to want to see it.

It's unconscionable she would allow such a close parallel to Cammarano like this continue on. It drags all reform/progressive/New Hoboken's image down to the Old Guard and Cammarano's level.

File the damn thing already - you've had PLENTY of time, it's way overdue and it wasn't a particularly big task.

(And no dodges like 'Zimmer filed her post-election report on time!' It's the joint candidates' committee where the real money was that's not been filed.)

One last bitter protracted growl from the beast as it slowly descends back into the pit.

Scammarano would not dare to buck the Gov now.

This is just a end delaying tactic on behalf of the The Machine and Angel "the Hack" Alicea is its mouthpiece.

Tomorrow, Scammie is over. And for the first time the City Council and mayor's office will not be held by the mighty forces of darkness.

Woe is them.

That is shady if thats true that Carol would be Mayor instead of Dawn. She is a member of the HCDO and obviously owes them her own "political favors". Why on earth would the TOWN ever agree to something like that. Dawn better start explaining or dispelling rumors immediately.

because Marsh can't win any other way than to have the FBI plow everybody else out of the way for her.

clever. so zimmer would stay council president and marsh would be mayor. but then why did they not run marsh for mayor in the first place? they thought she wouldn't win? why? what is in her background? these questions need some answering...
