Authorities seek witnesses, info in shooting death of boy who was dribbling basketball

JERSEY CITY – Jersey City police are investigating the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy Friday night who was allegedly gunned down on Rutgers Avenue, according to NJ.com. According to the website, the pre-teen was dribbling a basketball with his father when they were approached by two men who allegedly opened fire.

The boy was hit in his upper chest near one shoulder, an injury from which he later died at Jersey City Medical Center. The father was shot in the leg, according to NJ.com, and is in stable condition at Jersey City Medical Center.

Witnesses have said that as many as three shots were fired during the alleged crime, according the NJ.com.

Investigators from the Jersey City Police Department have a possible motive and theory for the crime, but this information has not been publicly released. Investigators, who are still interviewing witnesses and investigating the homicide, have asked that anyone who has information to call the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at (201) 915-1345.

The 12-year-old victim was, according to news reports, a seventh grader at P.S. 24.
