Special Swooshers victorious at winter games

Nicole Bawiec, Ronald Benitez, Dennis Driscoll, Kaitlyn Frey and Jovanni Torres led a 13-member contingent representing the Bayonne Recreation Swooshers Special Olympics Alpine Skiing and Snowshoeing teams by capturing two gold medals each at the recently-held 2013 S.O.N.J. Chapter Winter Games. The event was contested at the Mountain Creek Ski Area and the Mountain Creek Snow Tubing Area in Vernon. The results are as follows:

SHOWSHOEING: 100-m: Third place, bronze medal, Elaina Walsh, Elizabeth Wentworth; second place, silver medal, Siearra Battle, Jody Czucza; first place, gold medal, Nicole Bawiec, Dennis Driscoll, Kaitlyn Frey, Jovanni Torres, Dina Tryon.

200-m: Fourth place, Elaina Walsh; third place, bronze medal, Jody Czucza; second place, silver medal, Thomas Gutierrez, Ian Hudacko, Dina Tryon, Elizabeth Wentworth; first place, gold medal, Nicole Bawiec, Siearra Battle, Dennis Driscoll, Kaitlyn Frey, Jovanni Torres.

400-m: First place, gold medal, Thomas Gutierrez, Ian Hudacko.

SKIING: Slalom: Second place, silver medal, Samantha Ciemiecki; first place, gold medal, Ronald Benitez.

Super G: Second place, silver medal: Samantha Ciemiecki.

Giant slalom: First place, gold medal, Ronald Benitez.

The Swooshers were accompanied to the meet by their proud coaches John Valdora, Denise Bawiec, and Theresa Diaz.
