Extensive menu of unique dishes at Molos, with a skyline view

Whether you’re bringing your family, trying to impress a date, hosting an event, or just want to sit at a bar where you can sample an extensive wine list and appetizers while gazing at the Manhattan skyline, Molos in Weehawken is an elegant place to dine that has something for everyone.

Although the Greek/American seafood restaurant has an upscale feel and a range of fresh fish dishes, there’s plenty of light fare to enjoy as well. The three-year-old restaurant on the site of the former Arthur’s Landing has a full menu of drinks and entrees.

On a recent Tuesday evening, we dined on fresh seafood and appetizers a few tables away from a woman who was there with her young daughter, and not far from a young man sitting at the bar. The ferries took off from the nearby Port Imperial ferry stop in West New York en route to Manhattan.

The restaurant has an array of Mediterranean dishes and intends to soon have a selection of over 400 wines. With two floors overlooking the Hudson River, they’re also becoming a destination for weddings and banquets.

Besides several appetizers and a delicious seafood dish, we enjoyed some unique Greek desserts.

To start

The restaurant, which is walkable from both the Port Imperial light rail station and the ferry terminal, has separate menus for lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, cocktails, wines, and beer. They also offer pre fixe lunch ($20), dinner ($32), and a three-course lobster feast on Sunday ($39).

When we visited, it was hard to choose from so many unique Mediterranean and American appetizers. The appetizers included caviar mousse, a selection of Greek yogurts and dips, kobe meatballs, traditional salads, salmon tartare, a crab cake, cheese and figs flambéed with brandy, and the popular calamari (fried or grilled) with herb aioli.

We tried the zucchini chips with the Greek yogurt/cucumber/garlic dip. It was a delicious and flavorful treat to start with. We also enjoyed grilled octopus with an eggplant puree. It was well presented, tender, and delicious. Octopus is a rare treat, and when prepared right, it’s filling and tasty, as this was (see photo).

The raw bar offers oysters, clams, chilled crab legs or lobster, and a seafood plateau. Appetizers range from $6 to $19 (the price of the octopus).

Dinner

The dinner menu includes a roster of well seasoned delicacies from the fish market as well as other meat and seafood dishes (ranging from $28 to $39).

Fish choices include lobster (Nova Scotia hard shell), red snapper for two, wild Alaskan salmon with beets and garlic spinach, seafood and orzo, a tuna steak encrusted with sesame, and king prawn, with a variety of side dishes. Other dishes include lamb shank (oven roasted in a tomato broth, with orzo), lamb chops, and New York strip.

The Mediterranean fish dish recommended to us, lavraki, was a real treat – a filling, tender, mild white fish perfectly seasoned. It was tasty but not at all salty or fishy. For seafood lovers who want a moist, mild delight, it’s the perfect main course.

We had several sides to choose from, including the popular farmer’s market vegetables, truffle risotto, and Greek fries. We tried the spinach with garlic and chick peas to keep it healthy, and found it a nice complement to the fish.

Speaking of complements, let’s talk dessert! Always a fan of the nutty, syrupy sweet, tender taste of baklava, we couldn’t resist trying some, as well as the Galaktoboureko, a vanilla and citrus flavored custard pie. Both exceeded our expectations for a sweet, light dish. The restaurant offers sorbets, gelatos, and Greek yogurt with toasted walnuts to cool you off as well.

The array of food and desserts comes courtesy of Executive Chef Gregory Zapantis ,who came to Molos in November of 2014 following time spent in the kitchens of Estiatorio Milos, Trata, Kellari, and Thalassa in New York. He was born on the Greek island of Kefatonta to a traditional fisherman’s family and learned from years of hand-me-down recipes.

The restaurant has been expanding over its three years. General Manager Thomas Kazakos said they plan to increase the wine list to 450, to be the most extensive in the state. As it is, they’ve already got an extensive list of wines, beers, and cocktails.

They host special events such as monthly “Greek Nights” with live music and dancing. Happy hour runs 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays in the lounge, and on Saturdays and Sundays, guests can enjoy bottomless mimosas, bloody Marys, bellinis, and champagne for $18 while taking in the live jazz and views.

The restaurant can seat 150 in the main dining room, 120 in the upstairs dining room, which also has a panoramic view, and another 120 outdoors.

The restaurant is open seven days a week. Hours of operation are Monday and Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 10 p.m., Friday noon to 11 p.m., weekends 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. All credit cards are accepted.
