Councilman Ravi Bhalla will succeed Dawn Zimmer (the town's first female mayor), who declined to run again this year and endorsed Bhalla. (Zimmer is rumored to be up for an environmental position in the next gubernatorial administration.)
In his election on Tuesday night, he beat out second-place finisher Councilman Michael DeFusco. Both men had been subject to anonymous attacks on the Hudsonreporter.com website in recent weeks -- Bhalla because he is Sikh, DeFusco because he is an openly gay man. Both have also been targeted in anonymous flyers in the last two weeks of the campaign.
Besides Bhalla, two members of his council slate were elected: Councilman Jim Doyle and Emily Jabbour. Elected from the DeFusco slate was Vanessa Falco.
The school board slate backed by Bhalla and by candidate Jen Giattino, who finished third, was victorious: Sharyn Angley (an incumbent), Melanie Tekirian, and Chetali Khanna.
In the freeholder race, Anthony Romano won re-election. He also ran for mayor and came in fourth.
