Fulop proposes creation of Jersey City Animal Control Commission

Jersey City Councilman Steven Fulop plans to introduce a new ordinance at the next City Council meeting that would establish a Jersey City Animal Control Commission, to ensure more accountability in the city's Animal Control Division.

Fulop also plans to introduce an accompanying ordinance that would create a position of an Animal Control Ombudsman within the Office of the Mayor’s Action Bureau.

Fulop said the legislation was sparked in part by the owner of a lost cat. Recently, two animal control officers were suspended after the cat was allegedly dumped in a park rather than brought to the local animal shelter.

The Animal Control Division has been put in charge of the investigation of the officers' conduct, which Fulop found unacceptable.

“Whether its issues with the local SPCA, allegations of animal cruelty or a general lack of responsiveness, it is clear that something needs to be done with the animal control situation in Jersey City,” Fulop said.

City officials would not comment on Fulop's proposed legislation. -- Ricardo Kaulessar

Well at least doing something is better than doing nothing. I do agree with you, Paulis, that adding layers of bureaucracy to an already problematic enterprise won't necessarily solve the numerous problems that seem to come up in this department a few times each year.

But an animal control commission with volunteers will NOT COST TAX DOLLARS. With all of hte people willing to help the animals it may solve these problems that keep coming up.

Want examples? Just looking down at 'related stories' shows all the problems that keep happening. The animals can't help themselves. We must help them.

Fulop should keep on this and keep raising publicity about it.

Isn't there something better to spend our tax dollars on?

It seems to me that whats really needed is a house cleaning in the animal control division. Fulop is usually much better than this.

last line is funny john, but we dont know if this is an isolated incident or not, and someone needs to do SOMETHING. i hope it is not just an empty promise.

Well, there he goes again! Here is Steve Fulop making another grand stand before the election? Honestly, do we need to create an animal control ombudsman and commission because of a single incident? The animal control officers who let the cat go in Lincoln Park have been suspeneded. Keep in mind, Fulop's biggest contribution in Ward E has been a dog walk. Sometimes I wonder, does Fulop actually have a "u" in his name?
