" 'Una Buena Noche' means the celebration of Christmas Eve, but it also literally means to have a real nice night, so the name of the show has two meanings," said Lucio Fernandez, director.
Fernandez, who is also commissioner of public affairs for Union City, has been working with the show's producers E.D.V. Marketing, LLC and the Park PAC, who hope to make the one-night event an annual tradition at the theatre.
"We are trying to make this a yearly event," Fernandez said, "and are working with the Park Theatre to create more of a base for the community here, bringing them quality affordable shows. We really want to build up the Park Theatre and make it beautiful."
The show will be held next Saturday, Dec. 16.
Music and comedy
Stars of the evening will include internationally acclaimed musician El Indio Araucano, Stuart Marshall, Demetrio Alfonso, Pedro Domech, and Papo Ortega Cubanoson, as well as the comedic performances of Maria "Azuquita" and Fru Fru (Pepito), who have also become crowd favorites at New Jersey's annual Cuban American Parade in June.
"El Indio is a Peruvian, who became a big star in Cuba [and also enjoyed success in Central and South America]," said Fernandez. "And Pedro Domech used to dance at Cuba's famed Tropicana. Stuart Marshall will be singing American standards, and Azuquita and Fru Fru will be bringing their off-the-wall antics and comedy to the stage."
There will also be a special appearance by the local TapOle Dance Company and Roxana of the Grace Theatre Company.
"There will be a lot of Christmas songs, as well as Salsa and Cubano Son and music from all Latino nationalities," said Fernandez. "We are such a diverse community and we're trying to be as inclusive as possible. You want to give a little bit of everything to everyone, so everyone feels like they are part of the festivities."
Local sponsors for the show include Palisades Medical Center, Americas Stationary, and Marisol Auto Parts. Additional corporate sponsors include Univision 41, Telefutura 68, American Airlines, Café Bustelo, and Bacardi U.S.A. Inc.
Additional shows are being planned for the upcoming year, including a special performance as part of the festivities of the annual Cuban American Parade.
His own tour
One show will be Fernandez's own kickoff tri-state concert tour promoting his new CD titled Enamorados, which will be released in May.
"We're going to be doing a concert a week, and probably going to theatres and venues throughout New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and ending with a concert at Town Hall in Union City," said Fernandez.
Fernandez will also be performing favorite Broadway tunes as part of his repertoire, as well as some Latin American standards in addition to some original songs from the CD.
Admission to the musical
Admission for Una Noche Buena Musical is $30. It will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 8 p.m.
"The show should run about two hours, and promises to be a fabulous night of comedy music and dance," said Fernandez.
