HUDSON COUNTY -- With most of the results in, there were some surprises in Tuesday's municipal elections in Hudson County, as well as some results that were not as shocking.

In West New York, once-powerful incumbent Mayor Sal Vega and his slate of commissioners lost to challenger Dr. Felix Roque, who had begun his campaign against Vega two years ago with a failed recall election attempt. Now, Roque and his four fellow commissioner candidates will take command and choose a mayor from among themselves.

In North Bergen, Mayor Nicholas Sacco, who has been in office for more than twenty years, won re-election handily, along with his slate of commissioners. They beat a group called "Citizens for Change."

In North Bergen and in West New York, five people run for the Board of Commissioners and then select a mayor from among themselves.

In Hoboken, results were mixed. Most of those who won were incumbents, but political newcomer Jen Giattino beat incumbent Councilman Nino Giacchi in the 6th Ward, which was just enough to give Mayor Dawn Zimmer a 5-4 majority back on the City Council.

However, some of Zimmer's biggest foes also won re-election, including Councilman Michael Russo and Councilwoman Beth Mason.

Several of the Hoboken victors were separated from those defeated by only a few hundred votes, so anything can change. But it appears that these results are final.
