Dear Editor:
There was a time 50 or more years ago that Jersey City's residents had the best medical services available in the country. At one time in this city's history, no resident had to pay for medical treatment. The original Medical Center was the biggest and best facility in the Country. Attached to the Med Center was the Margaret Hague Medical building and nearby was the Fairmont Hospital. St. Francis Hospital served the residents of downtown Jersey City. Christ Hospital serviced the Jersey City Heights. Greenville Hospital provided medical services to southern and western Jersey City. The Bayonne Hospital was also a dependable medical facility servicing South Hudson.
What are we presently confronted with? St. Francis Hospital has been shut down; Fairmont Hospital and The Margaret Hague have been shut down; Bayonne Hospital and Greenville Hospital are teetering on extinction; The Jersey City Medical Center has been downsized and relocated. All of what we see is without question a crisis situation for New Jersey's second largest city.
If you want to destroy a community just shut down its houses of worship, its educational institutions and its medical facilities. The area of Jersey City that grew up around Greenville Hospital is now in danger of losing its lifeline. When hospitals close, more people will die due to the lack of accessible medical services.
We must reverse this dangerous trend, and we must start by saving the Greenville Hospital.
