As of July 1, 2008 Chief John J. Cassesa, Chief of The Hoboken, New Jersey Fire Department, is retiring after 40 years of outstanding service to the Department.
Appointed Firefighter, August 22, 1968; promoted to Captain, January 31, 1980; promoted to Deputy Chief, May 29, 1991 and promoted to Chief, September 6, 1995.
During his career as the Chief he raised the table of organization to the most in 30 years; more firefighters, more captains and more chief officers.
He created the first Rescue Company, the first Haz-Mat Unit, the first Marine Company and a second Rescue Company, Rescue Co. #2 (USAR), acquired the most up-to-date fire apparatus the department ever had. Also the most modern communication center according to Professional Communication Magazine.
Because of what he has done as the Chief, the Insurance Service Organization (ISO), a commercial fire insurance rating agency, designated the Hoboken Fire Department as the 24th Class One Fire Department in the country. The Hoboken Fire Department is the only Class One Department in the State of New Jersey.
