The move comes in preparation for an event called Hoboken Lepre-con that was organized on Facebook after the Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Parade was canceled. (The parade was always held on the first Saturday of March, but this year, Zimmer wanted it held on a weekday to stem the partying atmosphere that accompanies it, and the parade committee refused and canceled it altogether.)
The mayor said in an interview on Wednesday afternoon that she doesn’t know what to expect on the first Saturday, but the city is “all hands on deck,” with the police scheduled to be out in full force, enforcing a zero tolerance policy that could lead to $2,000 fines for disorderly and drunken behavior.
The Lepre-con event, as of Wednesday, has almost 13,000 members confirmed as attending on Facebook.
