Jersey City providing hourly pickups to transport residents to its shelters

JERSEY CITY – There is now a mandatory evacuation order for Jersey City residents who live on the first floor of buildings in Country Village, Society Hill, and Port Liberte. Mandatory evacuations have also been issued for ground floor and first floor residents in buildings east of Green Street from Essex Street north to Columbus Drive, east of Washington Boulevard/Columbus Drive north to 18th Street.

Affected residents are asked to see if they can stay with family or friends. Those who are unable to stay with family or friends can go to one of the city shelters.

Transportation to the city’s evacuation shelters will be provided by the Department of Recreation and the Department of Health and Human Services. Hourly Pick-ups began this morning at 8 a.m. and will continue until further notice. The hourly pick-up locations are: Society Hill, OLM/Country Village, the Newport Centre McDonald’s, the Pavonia PATH Station, the strip mall on Chapel Avenue near Port Liberte.

The Mayor’s Action Bureau is currently open and answering calls at (201) 547-4900. The bureau will remain open until further notice.

Residents who live in flood prone areas but who live above the second flor and being told to shelter in place.

As previously reported, Jersey City’s is sheltering residents are Middle School No. 4 at 107 Bright Street, PS No. 7 at 222 Laidlaw Ave., Dickinson High School at Palisades Avenue, PS No. 17 at 600 Bergen Avenue, and PS#41 at Wilkinson and Ocean avenues. Elderly residents and those with medical needsare asked to go to Middle School No. 4 because of its proximity to Jersey City Medical Center.

The city has also opened a pet friendly shelter at Pershing Field. All animals must be in a carrying case and dogs and cats must be on a leash in their carrying case. Pet owners must provide food and water for their animals. -– E. Assata Wright
