It was a battle for first place in the JCC of Bayonne’s Indoor Flag Football Jr. Division as the Bears (3-0-1) locked horns with the Colts (2-1-1). The Colts got on board first as Riley Robertson sprinted 15 yards for the game’s first TD and a 6-0 lead. For the Bears, their league-leading defense stepped up as Matt Miceli, Michael Egan, Akshat Thakur and Victor Mendolaro pounced on the Colts’ ballcarrier for a safety, making it 6-2, Colts. With their defense on the hunt, the Bears’ offense hit their marks as Alejandro “See Ya” Cifuentes notched his seventh TD of the season to give the Bears an 8-6 advantage.
The two-point advantage was short-lived as Michael Tedesco raced goal-to-goal for a TD and a 12-8 Colts’ lead. After Nate “Cinch” Cintron, Da’mien Taylor and Christopher Ballance fueled a Colts’ defensive stand they switched gears in hopes of stretching their lead but the Bears’ Drew Radil had other plans as he picked off a Colts’ pass to end the first half. The Colts started the second half with a bang as Ashley Solis sprinted around the right end for a TD, followed by an Erik Solis two-point grab to make it 20-8, Colts.
While their offense struggled, the Bears’ league-leading defense stayed true to form as Ryan Griffin and Matt Miceli mauled the Colts’ ballcarrier for their second safety of the bout. In spite of their defensive heroics, the Bears couldn’t keep pace with the Colts as the Colts notched a 20-10 victory.
