NORTH BERGEN – Mayor Nick Sacco and the Board of Commissioners welcomed members of the local Dominican community to township hall this week for a ceremony recognizing Dominican Independence Day. The event included remarks by prominent Dominican-Americans including Bienvenido Gutierrez, President of Asociacion Dominico-Americana, a local Dominican cultural association. The events also included the playing of the Dominican national anthem and a ceremonial raising of the Dominican flag.

“North Bergen is an incredibly diverse community that has been positively impacted by so many different cultures and we are proud to celebrate the contributions made by Dominicans and recognize them on this special day,” said Mayor Sacco.

Dominican Independence Day celebrates the Dominican Republic’s victory in its war for independence from Haiti in 1844. The holiday is observed in Dominican communities throughout the country with parades and celebrations like the one in North Bergen.
