Piero Romano teaches music at both Webster and Roosevelt schools to the students from kindergarten through sixth grades, but during his free time and during the summer months, he plays keyboards in his own band, the Piero Romano Ensemble. And in Romano's eyes, there's nothing better than getting the chance to perform with his band in front of some of his students. "It's really exciting to see the kids get so excited to see me," Romano said. "They get to see the end result of what I'm trying to teach." Romano will get another chance to perform in front of his students, their parents and all Weehawken residents tonight (July 9), when his band kicks off the annual Sunday Summer Concert Series at Hamilton Park Plaza, beginning at 6 p.m. The concert is the first of a series of seven Sunday concerts at either Hamilton Park, Old Glory Park or the senior citizen complex at 525 Gregory Ave. Popular musicians like Bob Cozzo, the Roy Meyer Swingers and the Arlene Carole Quartet will also perform during the course of the summer. Also, there will be the Thursday night "Big Band" Concerts on the waterfront in Lincoln Harbor Park. Those concerts will begin August 3 at 7 p.m., with the performance from the prestigious Guy Lombardo Orchestra. Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner stresses the importance of offering both the Sunday and Thursday concerts. "We've been doing it for 18 years now and it's proven to be very popular, especially with the senior citizens," Turner said. "What's nice is that it's Sunday evenings, with the beautiful view. It's usually cool. It's just a really nice way to enjoy the summer evening, enjoy the Boulevard [East] and enjoy the view. We try to make it enjoyable for everyone. And it's nice that the series kicks off with Piero, who is a Weehawken teacher. Everyone knows him and they enjoy his music." Romano said that his band consists of music teachers, including West New York resident and teacher Jesus Garcia and Jose Serrano, who teaches in Newark. "And Weehawken has always been so supportive of our work," Romano said. "It's a beautiful place to play, with the New York skyline right there. It means a lot to me to be able to work in the town and then play in the town. It's really very exciting." Romano said that he would have loved to perform more than one concert this summer, but he is leaving for a month's vacation to Italy. "I can't wait," Romano said. "This way, I get to leave on a high note." In more ways than one.
