Marriage is sacred

Dear Editor:

The United States Senate is preparing to vote on July 12 on a Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution affirming that marriage is between one man and one woman. As clergy of several Hudson County faith communities, we want to encourage the public's support to call our two U.S. Senators, Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg, at their numbers listed below to vote for this amendment.

We believe that the comparative health of the traditional family living out of Judeo-Christian values is not to be set aside for values foreign to the scriptures we share. We believe that God's design for the union of male and female, physically, emotionally and spiritually cannot be improved upon or even equaled in any other definition of marriage. Because we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, we do not come in blind judgment toward those who choose same sex partnerships. While we cannot encourage an unbiblical practice, neither do we encourage the persecution of those who have fallen into this perversion of love. Rather, we fully support the civil rights of those seeking same sex marriage in most aspects of their lives among us, but marriage, by biblical and historical definition, must remain an exception to such civil support.

Senator Jon Corzine's numbers are 973-645-3030; 202-224-4744; Fax 202-228-2197. Senator Frank Lautenberg's numbers are 973-639-8704; 202-224-3224; Fax 202-228-4054. They are currently in support of this vital amendment, but our going on record with a call will make an ultimate difference and an important witness.
