On Sept. 27, Lincoln Harbor will be transformed into a carnival of children's rides, prize booths, and information tents, to host the 16th annual Weehawken Day Festival. The all-day event promises entertainment for all ages, and the best part is: it's free.

New to this year's event is Dr. Level's hypnotist show and a Belly Bumper contest turning children into bouncing, bumping pin balls.

Along with the many live music performances, the festival has a deejay featuring karaoke singing. Proceeds will benefit the Babe Ruth Baseball/Softball League, the Youth Football League, the American Legion, and the Weehawken Elks.

Get your tickets

Although all Weehawken residents are welcome, registration is required. Registration will be held on the first floor of Weehawken Town Hall, 400 Park St. on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Registration the following week begins on Monday, Sept. 22 and runs through Friday, Sept 26 from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Those interested in attending must present proof of address, including driver's licenses, bank statements, and electric or telephone bills. But, registration won't be as strict as renewing a license at the DMV; Township Manager Jim Marchetti said that "most people are very honest."

There is a limit to one ticket per family, normally providing entry for six persons - four adults and two children. Again, the event is only open to those Weehawken residents who pre-register before the deadline of Sept. 26, so don't say you weren't warned.

A free ride

In addition to free entry, the town is providing free transportation to and from the event. Parking is limited on site, so using the shuttle service is recommended. The first buses will leave to the event at 11:30 and continue until 4:30 p.m. Buses return patrons to the pick-up points up to one hour after the festival ends: 7 p.m.

Bus pick-ups are at town schools, including Weehawken High School, Roosevelt School, Woodrow Wilson School, and Webster School. In addition, bus pick-ups are at 18th and Grand; and, 19th and Grand, Hackensack Plank, and Chestnut.

For the kids

The activities are endless. Hayrides to the pumpkin patch leave every fifteen minutes, and there is a Barney and Friends show beginning at 12:30 p.m. Children can pet farm animals at Jack's Petting Farm while they wait; even, wash off at a sanitizing station to ensure cleanliness.

Traditional carnival activities like face painting, arts and crafts, a moonwalk, super slides, and more are all available for children's entertainment.

Weehawken Day also offers brand new activities like Guitar Hero, where children strum a life-size, plastic guitar and pretend to shred along with some of the greatest rock songs of all time. A surf simulator will have kids hanging ten, and a speed radar pitching system will test their throwing arms.

Meet your neighbors

Located along the walkways will be numerous information tables, allowing patrons to learn more about the various organizations and upcoming events available in town.

Among the many groups that will be present are the Family Alliance Network, Weehawken Historical Commission, representatives from the D.A.R.E. program, and many more. The Jr. Girl Scouts and Brownie Troops No. 2408 and No. 2933 will also be there, and with any luck, giving away Girl Scout cookies.

Mayor Richard Turner said that the tables will offer "a lot of information about the groups in town." He is expecting more than 5,000 residents to come enjoy the festival this year.

"[The event is] our way of emphasizing the small community nature of Weehawken," Mayor Turner said, "which is something everybody loves about Weehawken. The day really highlights that." In the unfortunate event of rain, the festival will be held Sunday, Sept. 28 from 1 - 6 p.m.
