A funeral mass was celebrated Jan. 27 at Holy Rosary Church, Jersey City, for John A. Sorino, 72, of Greenacres, Fla. He passed away peacefully Jan. 21 after a brief illness, surrounded by family and friends in the Hospice Unit of JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Fla. Born in Jersey City to the late Joseph Sr., and Theresa Sorino, he lived in Jersey City before relocating to Florida in 1981. He celebrated his 42nd wedding anniversary on Dec. 5, 2013 with his wife, Eleanor, and his 72nd birthday on Jan. 3.

Educated in the Jersey City school system, he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959. He was rated an All-County and All-State football lineman in high school, playing alongside Harry Massey on his high school team. Mr. Sorino went on to attend the University of Wyoming on a football scholarship. He played football under famed coach, Bob Devaney. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Sorino was employed for many years in the automobile business in both Jersey City and Florida. He won numerous awards for his top-notch sales performance. As an adult, he was an avid tennis player. He and his wife, Eleanor, enjoyed traveling and often cruised to the Caribbean with friends. They journeyed to Italy several years ago, spent travel time in Nevada and California, in addition to returning frequently to New Jersey to visit with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor, his brother, Joseph Sorino of New Jersey and his cousins Richard and Ray Catena, also of New Jersey. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Angelo Sorino. Services arranged by the Introcaso Angelo Funeral Home, Jersey City.
