The stage is set for the JCC of Bayonne 2017 Indoor Soccer JR. Division “Championship” match between the (7-0-1) Wizards and the (5-3-1) Dragons. Boasting the league’s top ranked offense and defense, the Wizards only blemish on their record came at the hands of the Dragons who held the Wizards to a 2-2 overtime draw in week three. Taking an early 1-0 lead, the Wizards’ Christian Benson seemed in championship form as he netted his eighteenth goal of the season off an assist by David Matos. Answering quickly, the Dragons tied the bout at 1-1 when Ryan Ginty zipped a pass to Edward Denne who cashed in with a scoring blast. After a short lull in the action, the Wizards’ Christian Benson sparked things up again by nailing his second goal of the game off an assist by Amy Gabreal to give the Wizards a brief 2-1 advantage. Relying heavily on their team speed, the Dragons once again knotted things up as Edward Denne notched his second goal as Toni Rivada picked up the assist. Gridlocked at 2-2 for over ten minutes, the Wizards finally gained some wiggle room as David Matos and Christian Benson ripped in goals while Anthony Baez got into the assist column as the Wizards gained a 4-2 lead. Revving up their engines, the Dragons fired back as Aaliyana Cifuentes made it 4-3 with a scoring strike. Entering the final five minutes, it was still a heated contest but the Wizards got a huge boost as a defensive stop by Ereny Gabreal and a pinpoint pass by Sebastian Echeverry resulted in another scoring bullseye by Christian Benson. Down 5-3 with very little time remaining, the Dragons struck once more as Aaliyana Cifuentes popped in her second goal to tighten things up at 5-4 with just 2 minutes left on the clock. Hoping to force another overtime bout, the Dragons unleashed all their heavy hitters with Dexter Hudspeth and Elizabeth Cueto leading the charge but it was some last minute heroics by Wizards David Matos at net that gave the Wizards a narrow 5-4 victory and the “Gold Medal”.
