With streets still wet after a drenching rainstorm swept through the area, more than 1,500 people from inside and outside Hudson County took to the streets for the running of the 14th Annual Newport 10K run on May 6.
The runners helped raise money for the Jersey City Medical Center.
While local runners did not finish in the top ten, many from throughout Hudson County were competitive, finishing in among the top 100 runners in the race.
This year, two 24-year-old runners took first place in the men’s and women’s categories. Craig Lutz of Flagstaff, Ariz. crossed the finish line at 29:46.21, while Rosa Moriella of Brighton, Maine completed the race at 34:17.31.

Recreational and elite runners compete for $15,900 in prize money on a USA Track & Field-certified course that interweaved with the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway and provided spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline.
The open-air race is known as the fastest course in the tri-state area and is sponsored by Riker Danzig, Cosi, Courtyard Marriott Jersey City, and New Jersey Beer Co.
The annual May event started at Newport and had runners taking a route that brought them to Grove and 18th streets in the north, back down Jersey Avenue to First Street, then in a zigzag route down to Grand Street for a return to the waterfront and back north to the Newport area.
