Weehawken High School Peer Leadership recently became the regional winner of the Charity Champions competition for all of New Jersey. This was the first time the WHS PL was victorious at the state level, beating larger schools for the grand prize of getting to donate $2,500 to the NJ Elks Camp Moore, a summer camp for children with special needs.

The Charity Champions program promotes volunteerism in the community and gives organizations from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Virginia a chance to raise money for high school-selected charities.

WHS PL has been able to donate $4,700 to Camp Moore this year through the Charity Champions competition. When asked about the organization's accomplishments, PL Advisor Mrs. Mantineo simply stated, “There was never a doubt in my mind that it was our year to take states. This is the most dedicated group of students WHS PL has ever known- they deserve this victory!”

A film crew from Optimum came to Weehawken High School to film the June 20 celebration and check presentation that will air on Optimum television channel 18 sometime this summer.

The event was attended by members of the Weehawken Board of Education as well as Mayor Richard Turner who presented awards to several of the top students and presided over the check presentation.
