Former Secaucus High School principal is surprise guest speaker at superintendent’s convocation.

Secaucus schools staff and faculty members attending the superintendent’s convocation earlier this week were surprised by a guest speaker at the onset of the convocation, former Secaucus Middle and High School Principal Patrick Impreveduto.

After opening remarks by Board of Education President Jack McStowe and an introduction of the administrative team, Interim Superintendent Kenneth Knops commented that his transition to the position was made easier by the work of those in the district before his arrival. Knops quoted scientist Sir Isaac Newton: “If I have been able to see further, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.”

The interim superintendent hinted to the staff that he had invited back a very prominent educational leader, “a giant” from the past.

At this point Knops asked High School Principal Dr. Robert Berckes, who was waiting in the wings, to bring out this morning’s surprise guest speaker. Dr. Berckes led Mr. Impreveduto out to the podium to a thunderous ovation from the teachers and staff seated in the Performing Arts Center.

Addressing the assembled audience, Impreveduto made some lighthearted comments about the vintage pictures of him projected on to the screen in the Performing Arts Center, and joked with the administrators seated in front of him.

He then encouraged the approximately 250 staff members seated in front of him to enjoy the upcoming school year.

He told a story about how just a year or so ago a former Secaucus parent had called his office in Monmouth County to thank him for the guidance and mentoring he had provided her son over a decade ago.

Reflecting on this story, he reminded the educators in attendance that they need to always remember that in everything they do, they are continuously making an impact on impressionable students.

Standards-based report cards presented to packed audience at Huber Street School Coffee Presentation

A packed audience of parents and guardians attended this past week’s Coffee with the Elementary Principals and Supervisor in the Huber Street School Library on the topic of “What is a Standards-Based Report Card and How Will it Assess My Child’s Progress?”

Presented by Clarendon School Principal Steve Viggiani and Elementary Supervisor Dr. Danielle Garzon, the evening began on a positive note with the presenters sharing the spring 2017 PARCC Assessment Results.

The scores showed both Clarendon School and Huber Street School students made significant progress over last year’s test results.

Director of Curriculum Dr. Daniela Riser provided an overview of initiatives taking place in the district over the summer months, including the launch of the Empowering Writers Initiative and the training of 31 elementary staff members on Orton-Gillingham’s multisensory program.

Secaucus School District holds four-day orientation program for newly hired teachers and administrators

Since the conclusion of the previous school year this past June, a total of 18 new staff members have been hired by the Secaucus school district to fill a number of positions within the school system.

As a means of acclimating, orienting, and inducting the new teachers and administrators into the schools, the district’s administrative team planned, organized, and facilitated a four-day comprehensive workshop recently, focusing on a number of timely and relevant issues for the novice teachers and newly-hired staff members.

Throughout the four-day workshop, teachers were made aware of workplace expectations, provided an overview of the district’s observation and evaluation process, and immersed in a series of 27 different presentations facilitated by each of the members of the administrative team, Central Office Staff Members, second year teachers, and veteran staff members.
