This many be a first: Union City, West New York, Guttenberg, possibly other schools closed due to nor’easter

HUDSON COUNTY — In a rare event for those who’ve spent an awful lot of time in New Jersey schools, several schools made the decision to close on Monday, Jan. 23, and others canceled their afternoon activities due to a forecast for high winds and drenching rains on Monday afternoon into early the night. Other schools said they’d be monitoring the weather to see if they’d have to close early.
The West New York, Union City, and Guttenberg schools are closed on Monday. Hoboken canceled some after-care and afternoon activities and said they were watching the weather for a possible early dismissal. Weehawkeen canceled some afternoon activities. (Guttenberg has one elementary school.)
Watch your local district’s website to see if other closings take effects.
Forecasters were predicting that heavy rains and wind would start at 3 p.m. on Monday and drench the region for several hours. Rains would continue overnight into the early morning. There will still be some showers on and off on Tuesday.
The National Weather Service issued flood warnings.
This is a rare event for New Jersey schools. While they were closed for over a week for Hurricane Sandy and have closed for a day or two for blizzards, it’s hard to remember a day in the last few decades when a rain shower closed schools.
