Bayonne mourns the passing of Mary Elizabeth Carroll, wife of former Hudson County Freeholder Neil J. Carroll

BAYONNE — Mary Elizabeth “Maude” (nee: Kiley), Carroll, 88, passed away on January 24, 2017, at her home, with her family at her side. She started her career as an employee of Standard Oil. She later served as secretary to former Congressman Cornelius Gallagher until moving on to become the confidential secretary to the Chairman of the Board of the New Jersey Turnpike Commission, the former Bayonne Mayor Francis Fitzpatrick. In 1962, she became one of the founding members of the Carroll Security Agency, where she served until this past year in the capacity of Secretary/Treasurer. Born in Elizabeth, NJ to the late Mary (nee: Stark) and William Kiley, she was the wife of former Hudson County Freeholder Neil J. Carroll, for 67 years. She was the mother of Neil J. Carroll, Jr. and Marlene Ruiz, Kathleen Sax and her husband Ralph, Patricia Smith and her husband, former Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith and the late Mary Sue Cumfer. Grandmother of Donald Lee, Judge Christy Balbo, Kelly Ann Carroll, Neil J. Carroll III, Christopher Sax, Marygrace Smith and Julia Smith. She is also survived by two great-grandsons, Attilio and Patrick Balbo.
