School board appoints interim assistant principal for Secaucus High School

The Secaucus Board of Education appointed an interim assistant principal for Secaucus High School at its Jan. 19 meeting. Dan Di Guglielmo began work immediately, according to a press release announcing his position.

Guglielmo has an extensive teaching history. He started a 36-year career with the North Arlington School District as a middle school math teacher in September 1977. In 1984, the district awarded him Teacher of The Year. Guglielmo also left his mark in the district’s athletic division, having worked as a varsity baseball coach for 28 years, girls’ varsity basketball coach for 18 years, and assistant football coach for 21 years.

“I’m delighted with the appointment of Mr. Di Guglielmo as Interim Assistant Principal,” said Interim Superintendant Kenneth Knops. “He brings many years of success and accomplishment working in the public schools. I have no doubt he will set a positive tone in his new position and serve as a role model for our students.”

Three people charged with marijuana possession at Secaucus hotel

After police located a pound of marijuana at a local hotel, three people were arrested, according to a Police Department press release. On Jan. 16, officers responded to a “found property” report at the Residence Inn. Hotel management told them that cleaning staff located the bag in a room after the previous occupants checked out.

An ensuing investigation identified three suspects. Officials have charged William Bonilla, 26, of Union City with Possession with the Intent to Distribute Marijuana and Conspiracy to Distribute Marijuana in a quantity of more than one ounce. He was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility Jan 19, pending his first appearance in CJP (Central Judicial Processing) Court.

Secaucus police have also charged Susana Velasquez, 18, of North Bergen, and Luis Riofrio-Arias, 27, of Union City, with Conspiracy to Distribute Marijuana on a summons. The latter two are free, pending their CJP date.

“Individuals who think they can come to Secaucus solely to commit criminal acts without consequence are sadly mistaken,” said Chief Kevin Flaherty.
