Union City to adopt resolution on Sanctuary City status; will give city ID’s to all residents

UNION CITY — Union City’s Board of Commissioners on Tuesday will vote on a resolution to declare itself a sanctuary city, according to Erin Knoedler, the city’s director of operations. Sanctuary cities are said to be cities where local law enforcement refuses to work with ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) in locating undocumented immigrants in the area – with the exception of those charged with serious crimes.
The hearing comes days after Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop signed an executive order, officially making that municipality a sanctuary city. It also comes as a pushback of sorts against the president’s executive order last month, stripping federal funding from sanctuary cities.
Officials will consider adpoting the resolution at the Feb 7 Board of Commissioners meeting, at 7 p.m. at the Washington Elementary School.
Union City Mayor Brian Stack has come out forcefully against Trump’s actions, recently telling the Union City Reporter that, “We’re not going to allow anyone, whether it be the president of the United States, or anyone, to tell us who can live in our city and who we can help.”
The meeting will also have a first-reading ordinance on a municipal ID program for local residents, regardless of citizenship status. If adopted, the program would roll out within the coming weeks, Knoedler said.
