Matt Piscopo, a freshman at County Prep High School in Jersey City and aspiring Eagle Scout, is collaborating with Mayor James Davis to install thousands of veteran photographs at City Hall in a project Piscopo dubbed, “Hall of Heroes.” The goal is to honor Bayonne veterans by installing a photograph of every veteran from Bayonne lining the first-floor hallway of City Hall. “We knew we wanted to do something special for veterans in Bayonne,” said Piscopo, who met the mayor at the 9/11 anniversary ceremony at the Teardrop Memorial when Piscopo brought up the idea. Bayonne Board of Education (BBOED) Trustee and Hoboken High School teacher, Christopher Munoz, officially announced his candidacy for the 31st District NJ General Assembly seat, a two-year term, currently occupied by Nicholas Chiaravalloti. The district represents Bayonne and parts of Jersey City. This year’s elections are profoundly important. The entire NJ State Assembly, governor, and various municipal and mayoral elections will be up for grabs on November 7, 2017. The announcement from the Munoz campaign comes amid potential Assembly candidates lining up for the June 6 primary election. Munoz brings with him the backing of the Jersey City Teachers Association (JCEA). His running mate is Kristen Zadroga Hart, coordinator for athletics in the Jersey City School district and former campaign manager and spokesperson for Board of Education candidates supported by the JCEA. The JCEA has a good track record in winning elections. Click here for more.
A pioneering space engineer, a local school superintendent, and the youngest municipal clerk in New Jersey history were among the women honored in a Women’s History Month ceremony in late March. In an event held at the William J. Brenan Courthouse in Jersey City on March 22, this year’s theme was “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business.” Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner, North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco, Guttenberg Mayor Gerald Drasheff, and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop each handed out citations to women in their town who got the honor. Bayonne’s Gail Godesky was among the honorees. A graduate of Bayonne High School in 1970, she later earned national accreditation with honors from Fairfield University. In 1988, Godesky began a career with Provident Bank; by 1997, she’d transitioned to an assistant vice president. That same year, she left the bank for other career opportunities, returning in 2005. She serves on the board of the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce. Click here for more.
