To the Editor:
I have never been much for philosophy, but this quote from Plato resonates with me: “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination. …”
I am writing to recognize and express my thanks to Mr. Tony Good, Director of the Bayonne High School Marching Band and Indoor Percussion programs. Tony has inspired a community of young musicians that has not been seen since the days of the Bridgemen in the early 80s. His passion and leadership continue to challenge our kids, all while bringing them closer together and teaching them skills that will assist them long into the future, beyond their musical lives. Most recently the 2016-2017 indoor percussion season concluded. It was very successful, as the bees are now competing at a national level, proudly finishing as finalists in the Winter Guard International (WGI) and Mid-Atlantic Percussion Society (MAPS) competitions. Under Tony’s direction, marching band is more than just another afterschool activity; it’s an adventure in learning a different language and making new friends. Not only does marching band exercise the mind and body, but also it encourages friendships, cultivates creativity, and provides students with a unique opportunity to grow as individuals. From becoming more disciplined to understanding the complexities of working as a team, there are valuable life lessons instilled in our kids through this program. Leadership, Endurance, Discipline, Teamwork, Multi-tasking and Presentation are only some of the traits I see developing in our kids. Tony and his team are highly regarded as sincere, trusted and capable mentors, and they demonstrate this every single day. I would be remiss if I did not also thank Mr. Timothy Craig – Director of Art, Music and Drama, Mr. Richard Baccarella – Principal, Dr. Patricia McGeehan – Superintendent of Schools, and all of the trustees of the Bayonne Board of Education. Their commitment to appropriately fund the arts in our school system is essential for all of the reasons I have noted above. Finally, thank you to all the band parents for volunteering their time, often behind the scenes, and making our program the absolute very best.
