A funeral mass was held March 31 at St. Joseph of the Palisades R.C. Church, West New York, for Dr. Rolando Alum, Sr., 104, who died peacefully on March 27 at Palisades Hospital. Born in Cuba, where he was a professor and a dentist, he fled to the U.S. with his family in early 1961 to save his children from Communist indoctrination and oppression. He resided for his last 50 years in West New York and worked as a research scientist at Hoffmann-LaRoche, Nutley, until retirement. His ashes rest with those of his late wife, Sara (née Linera), at Flower Hill Mausoleum, North Bergen. Survivors include his sons: Professor Roland (Jr.) and attorney Luis (wife Maria); two grandchildren: Alexander (wife Amanda) and Janelle; great-grandchildren: Victoria and Marcus Alum; nephew José Alfonso, niece Cary Linera, and many second, third, and fourth cousins and multiple former students, ex-patients, neighbors, and friends.
Services arranged by Morgado Funeral Home, Union City.
