PETER J. ZAMPELLA, SR.

A funeral mass was celebrated May13 at Holy Rosary Church, Jersey City, for Peter J. Zampella, Sr., 94. He died May 4 at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. due to complications related to pneumonia. Peter was born in Jersey City, to the late Jennie and Joseph Zampella.
Peter was a graduate of Ferris High School, where he excelled in basketball, and a veteran of the Army of the United States (1943 – 1946); a proprietor of Zampella’s Men’s Clothing, established in 1903 by his late father, located on Newark Ave. in Downtown Jersey City; was a founding member of the Friendly Merchants Association; a member of the Knights of Columbus; Ward E Leader and Committee person; Ward E Councilman in Jersey City under the Jordan administration and a Freeholder of Hudson County under the Clark administration. He also served as the Director of Hudson County Roads until his retirement in 1997.
A lifelong Jersey City resident, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anne Drury Zampella; his children, Peter Jr., Jeannine, Andrea and her husband John and Joseph and his wife Kathleen. He was grandfather to Gia and her husband Dennis Balmaceda, Robert, Nicholas and Tatum Zampella. He was brother to Roslyn Maio, Francis Dwyer and his identical twin, Andrew. He is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was a parishioner of Holy Rosary Church where he previously served on the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees. Peter, rarely seen without a cigar, was an avid fan of politics and the New York Yankees. He enjoyed serving his community and found satisfaction in helping others.
