To the Editor:
Hadiya Pendleton was a student, a beloved daughter and friend, a voice against gun violence, and a dancer at President Obama’s inauguration. One week after her performance, she became a 15-year old victim of the very violence she tried to fight. June 2 at 4 p.m., National Gun Violence Awareness Day and what would have been Hadiya’s 18th birthday, Hoboken Mayor Mayor Zimmer will issue a proclamation at Hoboken City Hall, supporting one of the most passionate and dedicated groups for gun sense legislation, Moms Demand Action. Taking our cue from America’s responsible gun owners, we will wear orange, the color universally used among hunters to say, “I’m a person, not a target.” We invite you to join us, and those at more than 250 gun sense events around the country as we take up the torch from Hadiya and say, “We will fix this.” If you believe as we do, that we must promote responsible gun use and ownership, we welcome you to join Moms Demand Action, and stand with us in our fight to secure the rights and lives of all Americans.
