Just a piece of cloth but born on June 14, 1777

Dear Editor:

Believed originated by a school teacher B.J. Cigrand in 1885 as Flag Day birthday, President Harry Truman signed congressional Act in 1949 stating with Betsy Ross Version of 13-5 point stars in a circle and 13 stripes, 7 red and 6 whites. They planned to add additional stars and stripes as other colonies were added.

Just think, today’s flag would have 50 stars and 50 stripes, who could carry a flag of this size? So as we know it today, we kept the 13 stripes and added the 50 stars in the blue field. World War I, WWII and Korean Vets, did not serve under our present flag. We had only 48 stars the 49th and 50th stars were added for Alaska and Hawaii in 1959 and 1960. Just remember proper flag display, most of us have our hearts on our left side???

The stars and blue field should always face your heart the giant flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814 had 15 stars and 15 stripes, the flag measured 30×42 feet. Some 3 stories high yes,

Oh Say Can You See!

Jack O’Brien
