Hundreds of students and supporters lined the streets throughout the day to support the Special Olympics of New Jersey and law enforcement officers. The culmination of the run was the lighting of the Special Olympics New Jersey cauldron at the Opening Ceremony to officially begin the 2017 Summer Games, an event that features more than 2,500 Special Olympics athletes.

Clarendon School holds first grade reading centers

First grade students in Kerry Goldsack’s class at Clarendon Elementary School are engaged in independent reading center activities. The students read chapter books and their teacher conferences with them in small groups.

Goldsack utilizes small group instruction to work one on one with her students to ensure they are able to fluently read the text and understand what it’s about.

Goldsack also encourages her students on a daily basis to independently read throughout the day. During independent reading the students are able to select a book from their classroom library that they will enjoy, such as books on topics that interest them. The students continue to foster a love of learning through developing habits of reading and practicing the skills learned throughout the week.

Local senior receives special award

Secaucus High School Senior Drew Fournier was announced as the recipient of the prestigious 2017 Paper Mill Playhouse Student Achievement Rising Star Award on the basis of his performance as Rehearsal Pianist for the Secaucus High School musical performance of “Shrek.” Fournier was selected for this highly competitive award from approximately 100 high school performances judged throughout the State of New Jersey.

It is the first time in the history of Secaucus High School that a student has been the recipient of the Paper Mill Playhouse Student Achievement Rising Star Award.

Fournier was the only student musician winner this year from high schools throughout the state participating in these awards.

Fournier has experience both on stage and off, as he has played roles in the high school’s musicals also. In past performances of the school musical he was the Scarecrow in “Wizard of Oz” and Gladhand in “West Side Story.” Being such a talented musician, he decided to lend his talent in the orchestra instead for the last few years.

In order to be nominated for a Student Achievement Award, the coordinating teacher must write an essay with reasons why the student deserves to be recognized. Play Director Maleesa Lamatina described Fournier as a vital member of the “Shrek” team, and called him one of the most talented musicians to ever pass through Secaucus High School.
