HOBOKEN – Freeholder Anthony Romano confirmed his intention on Tuesday afternoon to run for mayor of Hoboken in November.
“Yes, I am running for mayor,” he told the Hoboken Reporter’s political columnist. He also said he would officially launch his campaign at a press conference shortly.
He will also continue his re-election bid for freeholder in November. Should he win both positions, he can only keep one.
His announcement comes immediately after Mayor Dawn Zimmer’s announcement on June 20 that she will not seek reelection. She endorsed her ally, Councilman Ravi Bhalla, who confirmed he will run. Also running for the mayor’s seat in November are Councilman Michael DeFusco and business owner Karen Nason.
The mayor’s seat and three council-at-large seats are up in November. The other six council spots are up for election in two years.
Just prior to Zimmer’s announcement, Romano said he had established an exploratory committee to look into his running.
