RECOGNITION FOR HOUSING AUTHORITY – The Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA) received honors at both the 2017 New Jersey Future Smart Growth Awards and the 23rd Annual Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Awards. New Jersey Future presents Smart Growth Awards to those developments that "serve the environment, the economy, and the community equally."

Nimbus Dance Works fundraises for new move

Facing an Aug. 31 deadline to identify a new home, Nimbus Dance Works announces that the organization, one of Jersey City’s largest professional arts non-profits and a leading dance organization statewide, will relocate to 165 Newark Ave., Jersey City, for the 2017-18 season.

Nimbus’ new location, adjacent to the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza, and with two dance studios, office and storage space, will house the professional company and Nimbus2 (second company), the School of Nimbus Dance Works, the Nimbus Presents performance series, and company offices from which Nimbus administers dance education programs throughout the Jersey City school system. Nimbus has announced a campaign to raise funds and for in-kind items to support the move to the new location.

Made available by Matt Weinreich and Hopkins Group LLC, the new location offers a temporary solution to Nimbus’ space needs. Nimbus hopes to publicly announce plans soon for a significant new arts facility in Jersey City to be constructed over the next two years.

Nimbus Artistic Director Samuel Pott said, “Jersey City’s character is intertwined with the arts, and I witness daily the ways that dance brings the residents and youth of our city together around shared values. We are grateful that Matt Weinreich and Hopkins Group share this vision for Jersey City and, at a critical moment for our organization, have made this fantastic space available to Nimbus for the immediate future.”

Hudson County CASA is seeking volunteers

Learn how to become a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer and help foster children find safe and permanent homes. The next information session will be at Little City Books at 100 Bloomfield St, Hoboken, NJ  on Tuesday, June 27th at 7:00 p.m.

 Hudson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a non-profit organization committed to advocating for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA works through trained community volunteers to ensure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes. Hudson County CASA volunteers are everyday people who make a direct impact in foster children’s lives. They are trusted, dedicated adults who seek to improve children’s well-being. CASA volunteers get to know their assigned child and his or her circumstances and provide valuable information to the court. Judges rely on the volunteers’ recommendations to make the best decisions about the children’s futures.

Project Eats returns on weekend

Jersey City is kicking off the summer season with the fifth annual Project: Eats returning downtown this weekend, Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25, at the City Hall Plaza.  The food-centric outdoor festival offers over 50 vendors each day, serving up savory cuisine alongside 4 beverage bars.

Sponsored by the city of Jersey City in collaboration with the non-profit The Jersey City Project, the ultimate foodie event highlights local small businesses, some of whom got their start at the festival in years past.  From food trucks to tents, new vendors will be featured each day.  The festival will also offer unique business-to-business partnerships this year with the addition of on-site experiential demonstrations and one-on-one visitor interactions. 

 To make sure food doesn’t go to waste, after each day vendors can donate extra food to St. Lucy Shelter through the Downtown Community Church.  Donation opportunities will also be available for attendees to help deliver meals to the largest food bank in Jersey City, The Sharing Place.

 Project: Eats will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in front of City Hall, 280 Grove St.

Port Authority names new director of tunnels, bridges, and terminals

The Port Authority announced that Diannae Ehler – a 33-year veteran who has spearheaded the agency’s efforts to upgrade the Port Authority Bus Terminal and help plan for its rebuilding since 2015 – has been named the agency’s new director of tunnels, bridges, and terminals.  Ms. Ehler will replace Cedrick Fulton, who is leaving the agency after 24 years of service to become President of MTA Bridges and Tunnels.

Ms. Ehler, who most recently served as General Manager of the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Lincoln Tunnel, will now oversee a department responsible for the operation and maintenance of one of the nation’s busiest transportation networks.
