JERSEY CITY – At the same moment the campaign for Mayor Steven Fulop boasted about out-fundraising its competition in the upcoming mayoral election, it also announced that Fulop’s re-election campaign and the Jersey City Democratic Committee are returning $11,800 in donations to Suez, the company that manages the city’s water system.
Suez had donated to Fulop’s campaigns since his 2013 election, but are returning donations from May 12 and June 28.
The donations were controversial because Fulop, when still a councilman, had been instrumental in crafting the city’s pay-to-play laws, which restrict most donations from vendors doing business with the city.
Fulop’s campaign announced this week that it ended the second fundraising quarter of the year with total of $360,000 raised among Team Fulop, Fulop for Mayor, and the Jersey City Democratic Committee. These accounts received donations from over 500 individuals. Since they have been open, these accounts have cumulatively received contributions from over 3,000 unique individuals.
