City Council appoints Barbara Reyes to Hoboken Housing Authority board

HOBOKEN– During last night’s five hour Hoboken City Council meeting, the council unanimously appointed lifelong resident Barbara Reyes to the Hoboken Housing Authority Board of Commissioners.
The seven-member board of commissioners oversees 1,353 units of low-income and senior citizen public housing on the west side of Hoboken. The HHA is partly funded by subsidies from the federal department of Housing and Urban Development.
Reyes will be taking the place of Commissioner Dana Wefer who resigned in June and served at her last meeting in early July.
Wefer resigned stating that she and her family would soon be moving out of town, and thus she could no longer serve the board.
Reye’s has lived in the Hoboken Housing Authority for a little over 10 years and she said as such she has a unique understanding of the needs of it’s residents.
“I believe from day one of moving into the housing authority,” said Reyes. “I have never missed a meeting. Right away I began to educate myself on the goings on in the HHA, I would OPRA documents, and ask housing authority administrators questions until I got the answers.”
Reyes currently works for local non profit HOPES CAP Inc. as a Community Services Programs Supervisor.
“Working at a non profit which helps low income individuals, I know whats needed in the community,” said Reyes.
She said that she looks forward to joining the board and tackling all the issues but that her “main concern has always been safety and making the the housing authority safer.”
