To the Editor:
I was born, raised, and educated in Hudson County. For nearly 10 years, I was a teacher/counselor in Middlesex County. For the past 40+ years, I have been on the staff at Bayonne High School. All of which should allow me to offer an opinion.
Before the Academy was just a” twinkle” in someone’s eye, “crusty” ole BHS sent numerous impressive students to Ivy League universities, all the local colleges, and prestigious out-of-state institutions. The key element was a faculty inspiring students to learn and achieve goals.
Some in the community, unfortunately, seem to believe that renovated classrooms, new paint, flashy bulbs, fancy desks, new tiles, and sturdy doors are the components of education. No! The qualified, dedicated, caring teacher is the undeniable integral aspect to the whole process.
Without question, Superintendent Dr. Michael Wanko will insure quality education, provide a safe environment, expose the beauty of diversity, and remove the ill-advised invisible wall of separation. All educators support his “Student First” approach. The parents and citizens must be positive thinkers too. The future success of Bayonne revolves around its children.
As an aside, there are two other matters. First, I dare anyone to compare our top students with those attending a Tech or a Catholic school in the area. Second, I ask the BBOED to be fiscally-wise, transparent, and rehire 59 ultimate professionals. All in bees!
