91, of Union City, N.J. passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Hoboken University Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Born in Jersey City on January 9, 1926 to the late Peter and Catherine Higgins, he was a lifelong resident of Union City. Joseph was a Navy veteran of World War II. After his service years he worked as a bus driver for Transport of N.J. and at the same time worked for the A&P store in Jersey City Heights. Survivors include his devoted wife Joan (Burr), loving children, Gail Sasso and husband Cosmo, Thomas and wife Colleen, Maureen Healy and husband Frank, Joanne Nagengast and husband Bob, James and Patty Higgins. Also surviving are his dear brother Frank Higgins, his adoring grandchildren Joseph and wife Maria, David and wife Jamie, Katie, Conor, Christopher and Lauren as well as his cherished great grandchildren, Gabriella (Pussycat) and Brandon (Rocky). Joseph’s Life celebration will include visiting on Friday, September 8, 2017, from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Leber Funeral Home, 2000 Kennedy Blvd., Union City, N.J. A funeral service will be offered on Saturday September 9, 2017, beginning at 11am at the funeral home. The celebrant will be family friend Rev. James O’Shea C.P. Friends and family may begin gathering at 10:30 Saturday morning before services. Joseph’s cremation will be private. For those desiring donations may be made to Veteran Organizations.
