McLAUGHLIN, JAMES ALOYSIUS, JR.

A mass of Christian burial took place Oct. 12 at St. Aloysius Church, Jersey City, for James Aloysius McLaughlin, Jr., 80, of Jersey City and Spring Lake Heights. He passed away Oct. 8. A graduate of Saint Peter’s Prep and the University of Notre Dame, he was the owner and operator of McLaughlin Funeral Home in Jersey City. While at Notre Dame, he was introduced to Mary Ellen Waldron, the two fell in love and married. A true native son of Jersey City, he was devoted to the city he loved so well and exemplified a life dedicated to public service.
In addition to being a councilman in Ward B of Jersey City, he served as a trustee and president of Boys and Girls Clubs of Hudson County, Chair of Saint Peter’s College Board of Regents, Commissioner and Chair of Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, Trustee of Saint Peter’s Prep, Commissioner of Jersey City Parking Authority, Chair of Hudson County Economic Development Corporation, Board Member of North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, Member of Hudson Legal Ethics Committee, the first lay Board Member of Saint Joseph’s Nursing Home, Trustee of Liberty HealthCare and Chairman of Jersey City Medical Center, where he spearheaded the building of the new Medical Center located on Grand Street.
Even though Jim gave so much of himself to the city he loved, his greatest achievement was his family. He loved and adored his wife Mary Ellen, his four daughters and his 11 grandchildren above all else, delighting in their successes and happiness. He will be missed by all. Jim was predeceased by his bride Mary Ellen. He is survived by his daughters, Maureen Byrne, Claire Juliana, Megan Becht and Maryellen McLaughlin; sons-in-law Tom Byrne, David Juliana, Dan Becht and Sean Flannery; grandchildren, Daniel, Conor, Tyler, Ryan, Fiona, Kiersten, Emma, Maeve, Gabriella, Camille and Jack; sisters, Jane Dalton and Nancy Buckman and her husband James Buckman and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins, all of whom he loved.
