The third annual Hudson County Fair wrapped up in Braddock Park Oct. 9. This year, officials extended the popular event to two weekends due to popular demand.
It began with a ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 29, featuring local elected officials and commissioners, then ran through Oct 1. The fair then relaunched on Oct. 5 through 9.
North Bergen resident Britney Lopez, 13, came to the fair on Oct. 8 with friend Jade Velasco, 13, from West New York. She was primarily interested in the Ferris wheel and seeing friends.
Velasco cited the “Starship Gravitron” ride, which simulates weightlessness, as one of her favorites. She also enjoyed the Ferris wheel, but said she was looking forward to going back on the other rides again. “We’ll redo some of them, I hope,” she said.
West New York resident Rene Paulino brought his young daughters to the event that evening. He found out about the fair from signs posted on Bergenline Avenue.
“I’m looking forward to getting on the Ferris wheel and the other rides with my little ones,” he said. “I never knew they had this around.”
The fair featured everything from a petting zoo and a 90-foot Ferris wheel to roller coasters, Tilt-o-whirls, monkey mazes, and live performances by bands such as The Nerds, Under Pressure, and Men of Horses.
Access to the event was free, but the rides and food cost a small fee.
Freeholder Anthony Vainieri was instrumental in reviving the fair in 2015 after a 35-year absence. According to officials, the previous iteration didn’t work well because of many logistical issues, including an elephant that got loose one year.
However, Vainieri made revitalizing Braddock Park a campaign promise shortly after being elected county freeholder in 2014.
He said that residents who remembered the original fair were ecstatic about its return.
“They asked me for it,” Vainieri said. “Everybody loves it.”
On Oct. 1, the fair invited local special needs kids to access the rides for free.
