PLAYER EQUIPMENT
QUESTION: During warm-ups referee (R2) notices that player on visiting team is wearing flesh colored band-aids which are covering pierced earrings. Referee also sees another player with ear plugs or spacers in his/ her ears. Referee does not bring this to attention of coach until pre-game conference. Is this a proper procedure? Is wearing these items a violation before the match begins?
ANSWER: These items are considered jewelry and are not to be worn during warm-ups and / or the match. Upon discovery, referee shall immediately notify head coach for player(s) to remove illegal items. There is no specific penalty administered unless player refuses to comply. Refusal results in an unsporting conduct penalty prior to match (Rule 4, Sec. 1, Art. 6, Pen.).
QUESTION: A player wearing glitter in hair/ on face or wearing body paint on face attempts to enter first set as a substitute. Floor referee (R2) whistles for substitute entry. Are these items legal? Should (R2) allow substitution or issue a warning?
ANSWER: This is considered illegal equipment. Player is not permitted to enter unless items are removed immediately. An unnecessary delay (administrative yellow card) is assessed to team for first violation (Rule 4, Sec. 1, Art. 7, Penalty #2).
