Hoping political backstabbing and hypocrisy will finally end with new leadership

Dear Editor:
How ironic to see past and current administration supporters accuse each other of political backstabbing. While Hoboken City Hall has always been a highly politicized place, the Zimmer Administration can take credit for raising the bar to unprecedented heights with their “you’re either in or you’re out” methods. Even Anthony Russo who set the previous standard for divisiveness and partisanship was quite community-minded in his first term and made several overtures to those who did not support him.
Politics-over-community aside, as well as the mismanagement of the Washington Street rehab project, Zimmer’s lasting legacy will no doubt be the compromised election practice she gave us which allows mayors and City Council people to be elected without a majority of the vote. This was the case when Zimmer got herself a second term and will be the case again next month. Not a recipe to inspire more people to participate in our election process.
Perhaps the new Mayor and council will have enough integrity to fix this and allow future officeholders to claim a mandate after Election Day.
