BALL CONTACT
QUESTION: In high school volleyball, with the ball in the plane of the net, the right front (RF) player on serving squad (Team S) simultaneously contacts the ball with left front (LF) player on receiving team (Team R). Ball next falls out of bounds on serving team’s (Team S) side. Is this replay? Is point awarded to Team (R) or Team (S)?
ANSWER: This is not a replay. The (LF) player on receiving team is considered the last to have touched the ball; hence, point is awarded to serving team (S). (Rule 9, Sec. 4, Art. 6, d).
QUESTION: The center front (CF) on receiving team (R) blocks an attack at the net as the ball continues in the air over Team (R)’s side of court. Center front (CF) player on Team (R) plays the ball next. Is this legal? Is this deemed two hits by same player?
ANSWER: Although this is successive contacts by same player (CF), this is considered legal as the first contact (block) is not deemed a hit. The subsequent contact by the same player would count as the team’s first hit (Rule 9, Sec. 4, Art. 7, c).
