Dear Editor:
This month marks the 27th annual National Recovery Month observed every September. A month when those effected by drug addiction take time to celebrate those who have succeeded in recovery. While remember those who have lost their life to addiction. A time when many are educated on the dangers of drug addiction.
At the beginning of the month the Center for Disease Control released the statistics for drug overdoses in 2016. In a sobering announcement 2016 became yet another year where drug overdose deaths increased. Over 64 thousand individuals lost their life this year. Whether you are an addict yourself, love someone who is, or are fortunate enough to be completely separated from the issue this month is a time to celebrate, offer support and remember those who have been affected.
Through the end of 2017 and till 2018 National Recovery Month needs to be every month. This issue is much to large to be delegated to just one month. Each day people overdose and die. Every citizen has a responsibility in tackling this problem. There is plenty to be done. Weather it is teaching kids the dangers of drug experimentation or learning to deliver the lifesaving drug Narcan which can reverse an opioid overdose.
The list goes on of ways everyone can get involved in making a difference. Writing your local officials, getting someone you know into drug treatment, and reporting those selling drugs are all good ways you can help. Not sure where to start? Look for local advocacy groups to collaborate with, as the epidemic spreads more groups are formed everyday across the country.
