BAYONNE – A 200-foot barge washed onto Bayonne’s western shore after the rain storm broke it free from its anchored position in Newark Bay, according to Edoardo “Junior” Ferrante, Bayonne Office of Emergency Management Coordinator. The barge crashed into the shore between 16th Street Park and 21st street. The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corporation uses the barges to store and carry away the dredged material from the bay bed. No injuries were reported. The Bayonne Fire Department and Police Department were on the scene at 6:30 a.m. At around 5 p.m. tonight, at high tide, the barge is expected to rise and loosen from its position in the mud, when the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corporation will tug it loose, according to Ferrante.
