Hoboken city council approves use of eminent domain on waterfront property

HOBOKEN — The Hoboken City Council approved the use of eminent domain on northern waterfront property for park space on Monday night. The council approved the use of eminent domain in a 8-0-1 vote. Councilman and mayoral elect Ravi Bhalla voted “present.”
Last week, the city was informed that a subsidiary for NY Waterway purchased the property from Union Dry Dock & Repair Co. for $11.5 million with the intention of using the property for ferry repairs and maintenance.
Several members of the community urged the council to pass the ordinance stating they would rather see the continuous waterfront walkway completed as well as waterfront park space.
