To the Editor:
I am a former parishioner and Trustee of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Along with all the other O.L.A. parishioners, I feel the loss of our church and parish community. Change and upheaval are never easy. However, adjustments are inevitable, and I wish to recognize and highly commend Rev. Zenon Boczek, SDS, Pastor of St. John Paul II Parish, and the Salvatorian priests who have ministered to the parish since July 2016.
Fr. Zenon has extended himself by making us feel welcome, working with our community, tending to our needs, and continuing our tradition of celebrating a Mass in Italian every Sunday at 9:30 AM at St. Michael’s Church on East 23rd Street. When our dear friend, Fr. Mark, could no longer continue to celebrate the Italian Mass, Fr. Zenon took the initiative to find a priest to assist us. Eventually he transferred Fr. Peter Haldas, a Salvatorian fluent in Italian, to St. John Paul II. Fr. Peter has been a blessing to our community. He communicates well with the parishioners, not only because of his language skills, but also because of his kindness and involvement in our activities. Together we worship at Sunday Mass, aided by a choir and organ accompaniment, and the traditional singing of the “Salve Regina” at the end of Mass.
All are invited to join us at Sunday Mass, experience the friendly and holy atmosphere with Fr. Peter and our community, and have the opportunity to meet Fr. Zenon.
