Former Hoboken council president sentenced to 30 months in prison

HOBOKEN — Ex-Council President Christopher Campos was sentenced to 30 months of prison on Friday Dec. 8.
Campos was convicted last summer of bank and wire fraud and conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud for a cab leasing scheme.
The $7 million scheme involved roughly 20 buyers who borrowed money to buy about 200 new cars they could not afford, claiming the cars would be for personal use, but they were in fact leased out to other people in New York as livery cabs.
“Christopher Campos, an attorney and former Hoboken City Council president, defrauded lenders out of millions of dollars,” said Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim in a press release. “He put up straw buyers to obtain loans for ‘personal use’ cars that in fact comprised a fleet of over 200 vehicles leased to livery drivers. Campos has now received the significant sentence his crimes merit.”
Campos served on the Hoboken City Council from 2001 to 2007.
In 2014 he served as a $35,000-$40,000-per-year full-time aide to former Assemblyman Carmelo Garcia.
