It was a child’s dream come true at the Recreation Center on Dec. 2, as North Bergen gave out hundreds of free toys to local children, from infants to 9 years old.
At the annual Children’s Christmas Party, officials gave out toys to 600 kids, purchased from local businesses at a discount, said Deputy Director of Parks Jimmy Avella. (Those who missed the event were able to register for one of the remaining toys the week after the event, and any remaining toys after that went to local churches and the town’s special needs program.)
The children wore smiles on their faces as they embraced items from companies such as Playskool, Fastlane, and Nerf. Some kids even received drones and Amazon Kindle Fire 7 tablets.
This year, for the first time, the township raffled off 30 Christmas trees donated by Kevin’s Tree Lot in Edgewater. ShopRite of North Bergen and Bayonne’s Judicke’s Bakery donated food and beverages to the cause.
A makeshift fireplace and stockings with the names of local commissioners and the mayor also adorned the center, making for a festive atmosphere.
More holiday fun is incoming for residents. On Dec. 15 at 4 p.m., the North Bergen Free Public Library will hold a meet-and-greet with Santa. Kids will leave with free goodie bags. The library is located at 8411 Bergenline Ave. Call 201-869-4715 for more information.
On Dec. 17, from noon to 3 p.m., your pets can have their pictures taken with Santa at Fussy Friends, located at 7731 Bergenline Ave. The fundraising event will also collect donations such as food, leashes, and blankets. All proceeds and donations will go to Brick City Rescue, a domestic animal rescue in Newark.
